Charles Waliggo, 1944 - 1998 (May his soul rest in eternal peace!)
He was born and raised in Kalizo and moved to Kyawagonya, Masaka district where spent all his adult life. He was raised in a catholic family which gave him a strong faith background. Besides working on many church projects, he served as a Catechist
for over 15 years at a church that his cousin, Fr. Joseph Luswata had established. My mother, as a young girl, had been raised by some nuns in a convent. Two people from such strong religious background produced an environment that drew us (the children) closer to the church and strengthened our spiritual growth. As a family we participated in a lot of church activities let alone praying together. My grandfather's friend/classmate from elementary school day had become a bishop of the local diocese, so our family developed a close relationship with the bishop and people in church circles.... no wonder why two of the sons considered religious life!!
Education: My father didn't have the privillege of receiving higher education. He did not have money to go on to secondary school. His primary education gave him a ground on which to build his own knowledge and skills through hands on experience. He proved to be a very smart man. He did a lot creative things which you would not imagine a person of his education level could do.
Having little education did not in any way make him lose sense of the importance of education; he was a man who believed in the power of education. He strongly encouraged us to study hard and gave the motivation to be high achievers in school. He earned very little and sacrificed so much to give us the best education he could afford. He always desired the best for his children and he indeed shaped our future--we wouldn't be where we are now had it not been his commitment to education and diligent planning.
Throughout his life, he dedicated his life to promoting peace and justice. He participated in a number of social movements. He enjoyed helping people in need. He was always sensitive to the needs of his community. He did a lot of community work helping out at local schools, churches, community events such as funerals, weddings, well maintenance and the like. He also served on various village and subcounty committees.
What he did for a living: My father was a very hard working man. Growing up in a poor home taught him what it means to 'live by the labor of your hands'. From a young age he worked to support himself and became independent much earlier in life. He first helped out at his father's woodshop doing carpentry and then moved on to work on his own on small businesses. When he acquired land for himself, he started farming which he continued to practice untill the last days on his life.
His Projects: He established and managed a various projects. Click here family projects
